In 2021, there were 18 million people working in the high-tech sector worldwide, so the issue is international, as well.

It affects the patients’ physical and mental state, and can even make some people resort to suicide attempts. Especially those who take pride in their masculinity.

Impotence can have serious consequences on other aspects of a man’s life, such as the appearance of anxiety and depression, leading to social isolation. And this leads to the destruction of interpersonal, family, and work relationships, that is, the whole state of life.

And the main danger of ED is that it is often a symptom of other, more serious diseases, such as:

●       Cardiovascular diseases, which according to statistics, are the cause of potency disorder in 60% of cases.

●       Prostatitis and infections. Urologists believe that prostatitis causes ED in 80% of cases.

●       Varicocele.

●       Hemorrhoids.

●       Groin hernia.

●       Diabetes mellitus. Almost 50% of men with diabetes suffer from erectile dysfunction.

●     Kidney disease. According to statistics, about 40% of men with kidney disease suffer from impotence.

It is well known that workers in the high-tech industry, who work both in offices and remotely, lead sedentary lifestyles.

Sitting in an armchair or lying on a sofa for long hours has a negative effect on the human body. It worsens health in general and increases the risk of developing and exacerbating a whole range of diseases, such as:

●       diabetes;

●       obesity;

●       cardiovascular diseases;

●       deterioration of the musculoskeletal system;

●       congestion in the pelvis;

●       stooping;

●       digestive disorders;

●       headaches.

In general, this leads to a decrease in the quality of life. No wonder employers try to organize various locations for physical activity in the office space. Starting from table tennis tables, to yoga and pilates classes.

Is there a direct link between a sedentary lifestyle and erectile dysfunction (ED)? This question is a subject of debate in scientific circles.

For example, one study on the topic, the results of which were published in November 2022, involved 20,789 people over the age of 40.

Its conclusions stated that people with erectile dysfunction were older and had a high body mass index. Hypodynamia was more common among them than it was among those without ED. The multivariate model showed that age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, high body mass index, lower urinary tract disease, and depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for erectile dysfunction. In turn, a high level of physical activity was a protective factor against erectile dysfunction.


It concluded that high levels of physical activity led to a lower risk of erectile dysfunction in more than 20% of men aged 40 years and older.

Another meta-analysis, published in 2015, reveals the causes of ED in people who are physically inactive.

Researchers believe that the comfort of modern life leads to two side effects: lack of physical activity and obesity. In the past, energy was expended in a variety of activities that are now fully or partially automated. Most daily activities, such as sitting at a computer, watching television, or driving a car, require much less energy.

The occurrence of ED is closely related to such factors, as:

●       cardiovascular diseases;

●       arterial hypertension;

●       diabetes and hyperlipidemia.

But it can also be caused by the lifestyle of a man, e.g. leading a sedentary lifestyle, being obese, smoking or abusing alcohol. And this is not a sporadic phenomenon that happens to almost every man, but a recurring one. It begins suddenly, manifests in varying degrees, and can progress.

The National Institute of Diabetes cites a sedentary lifestyle as one of the causes of ED. An in-depth review on the influence of lifestyle on ED, which examines a variety of sources, states: sedentary lifestyles and low levels of physical activity not only lead to cardiovascular diseases, but are also a significant risk factor for ED. For example, men who spent more than 5 hours a day in front of a TV/video or computer were three times more likely to have ED, than those who spent less than 1 hour a day doing these activities.

Alternative opinion

Another study, however, found no link between sedentary lifestyle and erectile dysfunction.

Only 50 men aged 38 to 79 took part in it. The researchers conclude, "Contrary to our initial expectations, the results of our observations showed that 38 participants (76%) who had a regular physically active lifestyle had ED. That is, lack of a sedentary lifestyle did not prevent the occurrence of erectile dysfunction". The researchers believe it is likely that the sample size was too small to get more reliable data.

How to avoid impotence with sedentary work

The advice comes from Michael F. Roizen, M.D.. He was the first physician in U.S. history to be appointed chief wellness officer at a major medical institution (Cleveland Clinic). He has written eight best-selling books on how to prolong a healthy and happy life. Dr. Roizen himself is a prime example of the usefulness of his advice: he is 68 calendar years old, but his actual body indicators correspond to a man of only 47.9 years old.

The doctor claims that a direct link between a sedentary lifestyle and ED has been proven. Lack of movement leads to increased weight and cardiovascular diseases, which directly affects ED. Measures that can help you prevent such a situation are the following.

1.      Moderate exercise. They are beneficial for the production of nitric oxide and, consequently, for potency. NO is a chemical with a short life span; the body must constantly synthesize it. The presence of oxide in the blood keeps the arteries open. This includes the ones that carry blood to the penis when a man gets aroused, Dr. Roizen states.

2.      A brisk walk for 30 minutes a day. Just spend less time in a chair at the computer or on the couch. Get a dog. You need to walk it twice a day. Take up archery or dancing. Walk to and from work. On your lunch break, you don't have to keep sitting in your workplace at all. You can go outside, walk to the nearest square or just take a walk around the perimeter of the neighborhood. The main thing is to move around more, writes the expert on healthy lifestyles.

You should know that doctors diagnose erectile dysfunction if a man has erectile problems for at least six months. Nevertheless, when the first symptoms of ED appear, you should immediately see a doctor, and he will recommend a comprehensive treatment. If we are talking about people leading a sedentary lifestyle, most likely, the main recommendation will be to increase physical activity.

What to do? Take short breaks (at least once an hour) for a short warm-up or walk. Other than that, as mentioned above, spend at least 30 minutes a day engaging in any physical activity. In this case, we are not necessarily talking about sports. Walking, swimming, cycling - and motor activity - will do. Special exercises for the pelvic floor will be quite beneficial.

The most effective medications for ED

While you are switching to a healthy lifestyle, your doctor may advise symptomatic or regular use of drugs that stimulate erection, in order to achieve faster and better treatment results. The most common ED drugs are:

●       Tadalafil (Cialis);

●       Sildenafil (Viagra);

●       Vardenafil (Levitra);

●       Avanafil (Stendra).

These are the active ingredients and the brands under which they have appeared on the market. Keep in mind that there are many generics of these brands, which may be just as effective but much cheaper.

The action of all these drugs is based on the fact that they increase the level of nitric oxide in the blood. And these drugs are especially effective for the penile vessels. Accordingly, the more blood goes to the penis, the easier it is for the body to achieve and maintain an erection. At the same time, it is important to note that the drugs work only when you are sexually aroused.

They are available both as pills and in the form of jelly or chewable lozenges. They should be taken in accordance with the instructions, 10-15 to 30-40 minutes before the intended intimacy.


Employees of the high-tech industry are at risk for developing ED due to their sedentary lifestyle. When men aren't physically active enough, their organs are not sufficiently supplied with blood, and testosterone production decreases. These changes lead to obesity and cardiovascular disease. Sitting in front of a computer too long leads to stagnation of blood in the pelvis, which inevitably affects the potency and may even be one of the causes of prostatitis. And in general, it reduces muscle tone.
